About the Leap Year Calculator

The Leap Year Calculator is a simple tool to instantly determine if a given year is a leap year. It's a handy utility for anyone who needs to know if a particular year contains the extra day of February 29th.

The Rules for Leap Years

Our calendar needs to stay in sync with the astronomical year, which is the time it takes for the Earth to orbit the sun (about 365.24 days). To account for the extra fraction of a day, the Gregorian calendar adds a leap day with these rules:

  1. A year is a leap year if it is evenly divisible by 4.
  2. However, if that year is also evenly divisible by 100, it is NOT a leap year...
  3. ...unless that year is also evenly divisible by 400. Then it IS a leap year.

This means the year 2000 was a leap year, but the years 1900 and 2100 are not.

Why is it important?

Knowing about leap years is crucial for long-term date calculations, scheduling, and in many scientific and computing applications. This tool removes the guesswork and gives you an immediate, accurate answer.
